Licenses

OSM

OSM's own software (the web desktop, its services, the installer, the server's screen) and its artwork are © 2026 Oliver. All rights reserved: OSM is not open source. You may use it on your servers as OSM's licence terms allow, but you may not copy it for others, change it, or take it apart to see how it works, except where the law allows that anyway. See LICENSE.

The open-source software in OSM, below, keeps its own licenses, and OSM's terms take none of their rights away.

Your OSM license

Every server runs OSM Free without a key, on as many servers as you like, at home. A product key, for one server, unlocks more:

Who may use itWhat it addsPrice
OSM Freehomesstorage, shared folders, backups, security, and apps, containers and virtual machines without a limit: everything a home needs; 10 accountsfree
HomehomesOSM Connect for 3 servers, faster, and support by email: a plan of your OSM account, nothing changes on the server4.99 € a month or 49 € a year
OSM Prohomes, and a business of one personZFS, an SSD cache, iSCSI Storage, Network Boot, graphics cards in virtual machines, speed limits, API tokens that change things, single sign-on for your own apps, joining a domain; 25 accounts; a year of Home99 € once per server
OSM Businessany organisationthe Domain (this server as your office's domain controller), high availability, 50 accounts (more for 5 € a year each), OSM Connect Plus, support the next working day390 € a year per server
OSM Enterpriseany organisationaccounts without a limit, support around the clock with response times, contractsfrom 1,990 € a year per server

Prices with VAT for Home and Pro, without it for Business and Enterprise. Every server can try Pro or Business for 30 days. Security updates, and getting at your own data, never depend on a license: a license that ends stops only changes to its paid features, never your server or your files. On the desktop, what a server's license does not include is greyed out, with the license that has it beside it. The App Catalog (OSM's own apps, and the CasaOS apps that work on OSM) and Containers are the same in every license. Settings > License is where a key is activated: the server gets its license file from OSM's website, or, without the internet, you download the file on another device and upload it (System).

A key is for one server at a time. A license file is valid for 90 days and renews itself every day while the server is online; a server without the internet needs a new file from your OSM account once a year (OSM Pro still never ends: only its file is renewed, at no cost). Moving a key that is in use to another server needs your OK, by email or on your OSM account, so a key someone else gets hold of is no use to them. A copy of a server's disk, or a new motherboard, counts as a new server.

The open-source software in OSM

OSM is built on Debian 13 and includes about 700 of its packages, under their own licenses: the GNU GPL and LGPL, the MPL, and permissive ones such as BSD, MIT and Apache. About 370 are installed; about 340 more are kept on the server for its system apps (File Protocols, Containers, Virtual Machines...) and for the tools some features install when first used. Each package's license comes with it.

  • Settings > System Info > Licenses lists every package installed on the server and its license, and shows each package's copyright file. A package kept for a system app carries its copyright file inside it, and appears in the list once it is installed.
  • On the server, each installed package's copyright file is also in /usr/share/doc/<package>/copyright.
  • The firmware for network cards and Wi-Fi, and on PCs the processors' microcode (from Debian's non-free-firmware section), are distributed in binary form under their makers' licenses, which Debian checks allow redistribution.

OSM is "based on Debian". It is not Debian, and is not made or endorsed by the Debian project.

Source code

For the software under the GPL, the LGPL and similar licenses, you can have the complete corresponding source code, at exactly the versions in your copy of OSM, the packages kept for its system apps included. The written offer is on every server (/usr/share/osm/source-offer.txt, also shown in Licenses) and says how to ask the seller for it. The offer is valid for three years from the sale.

Apps and other downloads

Some things are not part of OSM. Your server downloads them when you ask for them, and their own licenses apply to you:

  • Container apps from the App Catalog and from other catalogs. Some apps have conditions of their own (the AGPL, or rules about their name and logo). App names and logos belong to their projects, and OSM shows them only to name the apps.
  • ZFS support. ZFS's license (CDDL) differs from the Linux kernel's, so OSM does not include ZFS. When you install ZFS support, your server downloads Debian's ZFS source (from OSM's update service, like every package) and builds the module itself, as Debian does.
